A wonderful B&B in a 1735 house
While in Salem, NJ, for business, my wife and I stayed in a lovely B&B with neighboring farmland five minutes outside of town. Barrett's Plantation House dates from 1735 . We stayed in the oldest section. The B&B part has been restored, provided with a modern bathroom and comfy mattress in a four-poster bed. The rooms are tastefully filled with historic decorations. We truly enjoyed our night there. In the morning, breakfast was provided in the neighboring dinning room. It was elegantly served and very tasty. The owners, Gaynel and Craig, live in a modern addition to the rear. They were wonderful hosts, responding quickly to anything we needed. They also have a beautiful garden, an added treat. Enjoy more than a just a place to sleep
This is my second time staying at this historical, charming, and comfortable B&B. Each time I was there for a week. The hosts Gaynel and Craig have paid attention to every detail and are always focused on your comfort. The 2 guest rooms are beautifully appointed with private baths. Mine had a lovely canopy bed, charming sitting area, WiFi, and smart tv. The candlelight breakfasts featuring local delicacies were delicious. Prices are reasonable. I had another wonderful stay
I was visiting the Salem area on business in both Alloways and in Woodstown and this is the fourth time I have stayed at the Barrett’s Plantation House. I stayed in the Dickerson Suite for a second time, which I enjoy very much. The room had enough space to just sit back and relax and get your work done. I enjoyed my snack of a nice glass of wine and a Cheese platter while chatted with the owners about my trip. We always have a nice time talking to one another. They helped arrange a visit to a local museum that is always closed and that was very helpful. That had been a nice visit. I slept very soundly that night and the next morning had a wonderful breakfast of a Cheese Omelet and locally sourced bacon for me. The Raison cake was wonderful. So welcoming and just lovely
I have stayed at this warm and lovely inn three or four times now. It is beautifully decorated and the innkeepers are a joy to chat with. Both suites are lovely and just spotless. I hope to stay around Christmas as I’d love to see the holiday decor. They are wonderful cooks as well.

Lovely B&B, roomy & nice bath. Really nice couple, lots to share about the area. Breakfast was locally sourced (omlettes & pepper bacon), terrific fruit leadoff. We were in Dickenson which we privately renamed Camillias in Savannah. Great history to the place. Overall a great stay.

The Perfect B & B
I know that I'm exacting. When I encounter a perfect customer service experience, it makes my heart smile - because that's where superior customer service begins, in the heart. Superior Customer Service in a B & B manifests itself with innkeepers who make magic for their guests. For Gaynel and Craig - making magic is second nature. Please excuse the length of this review - it's a story worth telling. We were traveling to the Mannington area to bury a friend. Two couples - one from NH, one from RI and we stayed at Barretts for two splendid days. When the first couple arrived, Gaynel asked about dietary restrictions. When she learned that a member of the RI guests was from Saudi, she politely inquired about diet. She knew we were in Ramadan and was concerned about serving pork. Gaynel, Thank You for being wonderful. Your anticipatory concern and attention to this detail was heartfelt and appreciated. The House is spectacular. Small, quaint - stylish. Perfectly decorated. Just look at the picture of Gaynel standing in the dining room, candle-lit... for breakfast! It doesn't get better than this!! A wonderfully cooked breakfast was served each morning, in the same - over-the-top style. The food was delicious, the service - second to none, and it was peppered with interesting stories of local historical events. On the day we were leaving my group was introduced to a returning guest named Jess. We were told she was a guest who'd became a friend to Gaynel and Craig. Before the end of breakfast, Jess had become a friend of our New England troupe. It's easy to see, Barretts can be more than a B & B. Goodness lives here. Wonderful stay at the Barrett’s Plantation House after the Christmas House Tour
This was my second tome staying at the Barrett’s Plantation House and I really had a wonderful time. I had been staying at another hotel that was fully booked for a wedding and this Inn was on the Salem Christmas House Tour. I checked in after the tour was over. I ended up visiting the In. During the tour and they had a wonderful violinist who not only played beautifully but he was very engaging to talk to that afternoon. We had a very nice time and the inn was decorated to the hilt for the holidays. When the tour was over, I got to the Inn and the other guests were downstairs with our hosts in front of the fireplace. We had a glass of wine with our hosts and then Gaynel, our hostess prepared a snack of Shrimp Cocktail and a Roast Beef sandwich with Red Skin Potato Salad that was a real treat. I hit the pillow at 9:30pm and went out like a light. I had to wake up early for a museum tour in Alloway but came back in time for a wonderful breakfast in the Breakfast Room where the fire was going and we just relaxed and talked. The Breakfast was wonderful. We had a fresh Fruit Salad, a Sunday Soufflé with potatoes and an Amish Rum Break that was out of this world. The whole breakfast was excellent. I just would like to visit the Inn when I am not having to run around so much. I never seem to get that much sleep and I think that is the point of staying here is to relax. Still I had a wonderful time and the hosts could not have been nicer. The Inn is so beautifully decorated for the holidays. It was an excellent stay.

Traditional feel with modern amenities
We loved our stay here! The hosts were so welcoming and kind, and the breakfasts were absolutely delicious. It was so neat to stay in a house built in the 1700s, and especially neat when your hosts are knowledgeable of the history of it. Simply outstanding!
Barrett’s Plantation House in Salem County, NJ is possibly the BEST B&B that I have ever experienced! This B&B is set in the countryside of Mannington Township, yet close enough to various towns for lunch/dinner choices or various shopping venues. The owners, Gaynel and Craig, have done an outstanding job in creating a beautiful B&B, which is tastefully filled with period antiques and charm, and making one feel totally at home after crossing their threshold. Gaynel and Craig are both involved in the Salem County Historical Society and are very knowledgeable in the history of Salem County. Gaynel is a wonderful storyteller and Craig’s woodworking skills can be seen throughout the home. Two suites, the Dickinson Suite and the Morris Suite, are both wonderfully appointed with queen sized beds, private modern bathrooms, and plenty of room to walk around. I chose the Dickinson Suite and was extremely pleased with my choice, as it overlooked the beautiful courtyard. The bed was extremely comfortable, offering a very restful night of sleep for the four nights that I was there. The room, as well as the rest of the home, was very clean and well cared for, which showed the love that these owners have for the property. The landing between the rooms offered a Keurig coffee maker for early morning coffee or hot tea, along with a light snacks or soda in the small mini-fridge for later in the day. The candle-lit breakfast, which was prepared by Gaynel, offers a farm to table experience by using locally sourced meats and produce. The NJ strawberries (which I had not had in many years) were absolutely delicious, as was the pineapple zucchini bread. The turkey bacon accompanying my cheese omelet was mouthwatering! One will definitely not walk away from the breakfast table hungry! I will definitely be staying at this property in the future whenever I return to southern NJ. Simply outstanding!

WOW!! Wish we had stayed longer!
My wife and I have just returned home to Florida from a 3 week trip to VA, NJ. and RI to visit family and friends. One of the most memorable highlights of our trip was having the opportunity to stay at the Barretts Plantation House. We had heard about it from an online review posted by a high school friend, and when our regular NJ accommodations didn't work out, we decided to give it a try. We are soooo glad we did!! The house has been beautifully restored to its original colonial time period by Craig and Gay, the owners. Craig is a amazingly talented master woodworker and craftsman who has done an incredible job in both the structural restoration and the creation of furnishings for the house. He and Gay have completed the decor with additional antique furniture, wall hangings, and curios from the time period. Stepping through the entry door is like stepping back in time and you could spend many days just enjoying the historically detailed interior visuals that the house offers. But the visual aspect of the house is only half of its allure. Whereas Craig is a master craftsman, Gay is a master historian and storyteller. What brought the house alive, and made it such a fascinating experience, was listening to her stories about the home's history and the colonial history of the surrounding area. My wife and I grew up in Salem County and have a personal interest in its history, so it was a special treat to hear Gay's perspectives on the subject. But the more we talked, the more we discovered other mutual historical and general interests. My wife and Gay, in particular, discovered a unique connection concerning a historical character that they both admired. Before long, we felt like we were talking to long time friends and spent hours sitting in front of the fireplace enjoying lively and entertaining conversations. Of course part of the house's charm is its reported hauntings over the past centuries and Craig and Gay's recounting of ghost sightings was very interesting and thought provoking. Luckily, or unluckily depending on your opinion on the matter, we didn't see any ghosts during our stay. But I have to admit that, after hearing all the stories, I almost expected to see one. On the B&B aspect of the visit, my wife and I were equally impressed. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was modern ( I really didn't want that to be done in the colonial period), and breakfast in the morning was Michelin Star worthy. The French Toast was the best I've ever had, the meats and produce were locally sourced, and the presentation and table settings were wonderful. I guess you can tell by what I've written above that I was pretty happy with the place. We had only planned for a two day stay in NJ but at the end of the visit, we were wishing we could stay longer. When I think of a B&B, I usually think of just an interesting old place to put my suitcase, sleep, grab some breakfast and then get on with my business in the local area. Barretts Plantation House flipped that perspective for my wife and me. We found ourselves wanting to finish our local visits quickly so we could get back to it and enjoy its warm and relaxing comfort and share more stories about history and our respective personal travels and experiences with Craig and Gay. Thank you Gay and Craig for sharing your home with us and for creating a very special experience that we will always remember. We wish both of you the very best of everything!
